Identifying Parts of Speech
Steps to identifying words in sentences:
1. Underline subject once
2. Underline verb twice - Label AV (Action Verb)
or LV (Linking Verb)
3. Put parentheses around (prepositional phrases) Label preposition (PR) and object of preposition (OP)
4. Search for possible direct objects or predicate words Action Verbs (AV): -Label Direct Object (DO
), Label Indirect Object (IO)
-Draw an arrow from the action verb to the direct object
or Linking Verbs (LV): -Label predicate adjective (PA)
-Label predicate noun (
PN)
-Draw an arrow from the predicate word to the subject
5. Circle conjunctions - and, but, or *Check to see that the same parts of speech and usage are connected
6. Label Adjectives (Adj) and Adverbs (Adv)
Draw a line from the adjective or adverb to the word it describes
7. Cross out articles - (X) - a, an, the
