Subject - The noun or pronoun that tells you whom or what the sentence is about.       Ask yourself:  Whom or what  is the sentence about? Verb - Tells you what the subject does or is.       Ask yourself:  What does the subject do or have? Action Verb- Names an action you can imagine going on.      Direct Object - Receives the action of a verb.  Ask yourself:  Whom? or What? after the action verb.      Indirect Object - An indirect object answers the question To whom? or For whom the action was done. Linking Verb - Connects the subject of the sentence with a noun or adjective in the predicate.      Predicate Adjective-  An adjective that follows a linking verb and describes the subject      Predicate Noun- A noun that follows a linking verb and renames the subject

Identifying Parts of Speech  Steps to identifying words in sentences: 1. Underline subject once 2.   Underline verb twice             - Label AV (Action Verb)                    or LV (Linking Verb) 3.   Put parentheses around (prepositional phrases)       Label preposition (PR) and object of preposition (OP)  4.
